Is the contract they signed to finish a series, or to provide their audience with their creativity in all forms?

I've never written a book before, but I know that writing a short story is a labor. George gave us Elden Ring lore because on some level he thought the project interesting - no point trying to box a creative writer into audience expectations. They create what they create, we are all just along for the ride.
